For my May 2019 Blog Post I wanted to share my favorite hair accessories and headpieces seen at the 2019 Met Gala!

Camp: Notes on Fashion

The Met Gala, also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. It also marks the opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit. If you’re in New York City, this annual exhibit is a must-see!

Each year, the Met Gala chooses a theme of that year's Costume Institute exhibition, which sets the tone for the formal dress of the night. Guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit.

The 2019 Met Gala theme is - Camp: Notes on Fashion. You might be wondering what "camp" means when it comes to fashion and styling...

The textbook definition of "camp" is...something that provides sophisticated, knowing amusement, as by virtue of its being artlessly mannered or stylized, or self-consciously artificial and extravagant.

Along the same lines as the definition above, "camp" in fashion and styling means it opposes satisfaction and seeks to challenge. It disrupts many concepts of what fashion and style are and what can be classified as "good." It takes an ordinary concept in fashion and styling and exaggerates it to an extreme.

"Camp" Hair Accessories and Headpieces

I have been observing and admiring photos and coverage of Met Galas for over 20 years, and while I LUV the 2019 Met Gala theme, I honestly try never to pay attention to the theme because I don't want the concept of the chosen theme to distort my ability to appreciate the individual styles and fashions seen at this event.

Further, regardless of the theme, my eye is always focused on the hair accessories and headpieces that grace the Met Gala red carpet. Some years, Met Gala attendees wear outrageous hair accessories and headpieces. For example, Sarah Jessica Parker is one of my favorite celebrities to observe because her chosen headwear is almost always extravagant.

Even though I try not to pay attention to the theme, I have found that the Met Gala theme will greatly influence how celebrities accessorize, especially with their hair accessories and headpieces. The 2019 theme of "camp" screamed – GO CRAZY – and it appears that this is exactly what guests did with their styling efforts, fashion and especially, their headwear.

For this reason, the 2019 Met Gala was by far my favorite and the hair accessories and headpieces worn at this year’s event were crazy amazing – I LUVed it!

Additionally, as the maker of hair accessories at – I would have to say that my designs are extremely “camp.” I LUV making Mouse Ears, Cat Ears, Flower Crowns and adding something exaggerated to each accessory that makes it unusual and unique, such as paint, neon colors, LED lights or an oversized decoration.

In fact, many have told me that my designs are not “aesthetically pleasing” and my response is always, “GOOD!” I have never wanted my designs to be considered “pleasing” but instead, I would prefer people to think, “That’s interesting.” Designing anything that is considered “interesting” is a greater compliment from my perspective because it means that people are more engaged with my designs.

With that being said, “camp” in styling and fashion is also not “pleasing” but instead “interesting,” and I will continue to design and offer "camp" hair accessories and headpieces to all!

Favorite 2019 Met Gala Hair Accessories and Headpieces

Alrighty then...onto the good stuff – pictures!

Below are my favorite hair accessories and headpieces that were photographed at the 2019 Met Gala.

When I look at some of the below hair accessories and headpieces, I’m thinking that many of these designs look similar to hair accessories I wear every day (not joking!) For example, I often wear up to 10 flower hair clips throughout my hair or large flower headbands with crystals. I LUV exaggerated accessories, especially those placed on my head.

While the below headwear appears “normal” to me, in reality – they are wonderfully exaggerated and “campy” designs that I adore. Check them out!

Special Note: I purposely did NOT include celebrity names NOR designer brand names because when I observe styles and fashions - I prefer to do so without being influenced by who is wearing what brand name.

While you may recognize many of the celebrities in the images below and even the brands they wear, try looking at the hair accessories and headpieces as if they are a separate piece of art that someone can wear. Try to let go of any concept you might have about what is "good" and look at them in terms of what is "interesting."
